THE BOOK

"Fascinating memories from Em Buckman, who has seen the trials and triumphs LGBTs have been through." Peter Tatchell, Human Rights Campaigner

"A beautiful book. Moving, forthright, courageous and enlightening."

For anyone who has ever felt alienated, or felt the need to hide behind a mask; this book is for you. Through a combination of memoir, interviews and research-based commentary, the book explores LGBT+ life through the ages and what it can tell us about inclusivity and tolerance.

Now 60, I look back at my life as a teenage "fag hag" in 1980s London, and the journey I've taken since then to accept myself.

I take a deep look at how society has represented LGBT+ people throughout history, right up to the present day, in what has been described as an uplifting and impassioned book.

This book is about the human spirit: flawed but able to cope; different from others but accepting ourselves and others; bent, but not broken.

If you buy the book, you're supporting charity as all my proceeds go to two charities close to my heart, The Peter Tatchell Foundation, and Mind in Brighton and Hove. Peter Tatchell tirelessly campaigns for human rights, and Mind support local people with mental health issues.

REVIEWS OF
BENT IS NOT BROKEN

Excerpts from Reviews on Amazon and Goodreads

"This is one of the best books I have ever read. Exquisitely written and expertly researched."

"Moving, forthright, honest, courageous and enlightening. A beautiful book written by a beautiful soul, and inspirational on many levels."

"Brilliant! This is both a very entertaining read and an extremely informative one. MJ Buckman combines impeccable research with honest, gripping personal stories, to provide unique insights."

"The author blends her own life story with that of her friends skillfully and empathetically. She weaves in a social history of the LGBT+ community including the use of language which I found fascinating. The book is very well written and easy to read (even though some of the events depicted are traumatic) and would be helpful for anyone struggling to accept who they are. Bravo!"

"Very likely one of the most interesting queer/allied books to come out in years!

Bent Is Not Broken is a truly compelling and poignant read, expertly weaving together personal recounts, and a first-hand perspective of the author immersed in the gay community of London in the 1980s. Her narrative is enriched with heart-rending accounts from those she interviewed, shedding light on their deep struggles, painful anxieties, and personal triumphs. This book is a testament to the strength of human spirit, making it a must-read for both younger LGBT+ individuals seeking to understand the past, and older readers reminiscing on their life journey. A truly captivating read!"
